Face Yoga – Does It Work?

By now, most people are familiar with yoga and its wide array of benefits. From strength and flexibility to stress relief and pain management, there is no lack of reasons to incorporate yoga into your routine. And there are just as many types of yoga as there are benefits to be had: from hot yoga, power yoga, restorative yoga and now: facial yoga.

Just as you would hit the gym to get fit and tone up your entire body, the same principles can be applied to strengthening and tightening the muscles of the face. The face and neck are made up of muscles just as the rest of our body is, so stimulating and working those muscles should help to define and tone our facial muscles. This is the defining principle behind the phenomenon of face yoga.

How does Face Yoga Work?

Facial yoga is all about utilizing the strength training type exercises you do for your body and translating them to the face. There are a variety of different exercises using various expressions to lift, pull or push the face and neck for a certain amount of time or for a specified number of repetitions. Some of the exercises use your fingers for a bit of added resistance, just as you would with weights.

By strengthening these muscles, proponents of facial yoga report smoothing out wrinkles, firming up saggy skin, improving overall facial tone, along with a fuller appearance to the face. There are exercises that claim to smooth smile lines by breaking down the tension that exists from within the mouth, to firm up the muscles in the cheeks by increasing skin elasticity, to slim the neck and double chin and of course to decrease the appearance of eye wrinkles and crow’s feet.

Since exercise in general also helps improve blood flow and circulation, delivering a fresh supply of oxygen to your skin and flushing it with nutrients, facial yoga can also help improve your complexion and potentially even increase collagen production.

Ok, But Does Face Yoga Work?

It all sounds good in theory, but many are left asking themselves, “does facial yoga work?” Studies are saying yes, with a condition: a commitment to consistency is required. To see real results, you should ideally be practicing facial yoga every single day for about 30 minutes each session and it could take up to 3-4 weeks to begin to see any results.

Proper form is also crucial, as doing the facial exercises incorrectly could actually exacerbate the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. A simple description or photo is likely not enough to get a good handle on the execution of an exercise, but videos or live tutorials can be a big help.

If you have the time to commit to a daily practice, facial yoga could be a good non-surgical anti-aging option to turn back the clock. If you’re up for the challenge, schedule out a time each day when you will complete your exercises and try to commit to this routine for at least 4-5 months. Make sure to take progress photos as you go, so you can look back and see any changes! Used in conjunction with anti-aging skincare and adequate sun protection, you might see some real improvement in the muscle tone of your face!
